Post 19: “The Voice of Tinker Jones”

From 13-Year-Old Anne’s Journal —

November 24, 1982 – FAIR

“The community wanted a bell & Mrs. Oleson wanted to buy it so it could have her name on it. Other people wanted everybody to buy it. This tinker made a bell with the help of all the kids.”

Bring on the cheese! Here’s one of those episodes where the kids say “YEAH!” in unison as they all agree to help the deaf tinker (with his Prince Valiant haircut) make a bell for the church and stop the adults from fighting about the bell and how it will be funded.

I was sort of excited to hear swearing in this episode. Hot-headed Kennedy calls it a “damn bell” — in front of Caroline, no less! Not sure that’s realistic. I’d expect Pa to give the ole’ left hook to anyone who swore in front of his wife. Nobody’s gonna slug a deaf guy for hanging up a bell, though.

From Tracy —

I would agree with 13 year-old Anne. This episode is only “fair.” It’s a little too cutesy even for Little House. And it killed me (killed me!) to see all those toys getting melted down. I can’t even imagine how much time it would take Tinker to make and paint those. Of course if they were really made out of metal, wouldn’t they be too heavy to even play with? I do remember identifying them as the famous Breyer Horses I was playing with the same time I was watching LHOP. (This link goes to a humorous blog which describes — with humor — the individual Breyer models being melted down: “If you’re looking for the hobby equivalent of a snuff film, well, this is for you!”) I was quite the Nellie Oleson in my time and had a stable and quite a few different breeds. The Appaloosa with its spotted butt was my fave.

Here’s a witty fanmade video on Breyer Horses. This girl has it going on. I didn’t have any riders and the Barbies and the other dolls were either too small or too big. (So jealous!) Scale was really important to me for some reason. Enjoy!
